World Mental Health Day

World Mental Health Day reminds us how vital it is to care for our own wellbeing - especially in veterinary medicine, where compassion and pressure often go hand in hand. Our profession demands empathy, resilience, and long hours, often leaving little room for self-care.

Research published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association found that veterinarians face a higher risk of suicide. Between 2003 and 2014, 197 veterinarians and 5 veterinary students died by suicide or undetermined causes, and nearly half had access to euthanasia drugs (Nett et al., 2020). These figures are a reminder of the emotional toll the profession can take and highlight a reality that must be addressed.

Behind every statistic are colleagues and friends who dedicate their lives to caring for animals -and often managing immense emotional strain. Compassion fatigue, burnout, and moral stress are all too common, but awareness, prevention, and support can make a meaningful difference.

At EuthaSafe, we believe action is essential. Our secure controlled drug storage and transport system helps reduce risk while supporting safer, healthier veterinary workplaces. But technology alone isn’t enough. Open conversations, peer support, and mental health resources are equally important. By fostering a culture where it’s okay to speak up, ask for help, and take a step back when needed, we can protect both our teams and the animals we care for.

This World Mental Health Day, let’s commit to looking out for one another. Check in with colleagues, talk openly, and prioritise safety and wellbeing at the heart of every practice. Small steps such as whether it’s storing drugs safely, sharing a difficult day with a trusted peer, or reaching out for professional support can have a big impact.

If you or someone you know is struggling, support is available:

Together, we can create a veterinary community where compassion extends not just to our patients, but also to ourselves and each other.
